buildingSMART International User Group

by Jan Karlshøj — last modified Apr 03, 2015 05:06 PM
This site is the official International User Group website maintained by buildingSMART to provide information to users and the Process standards regarding capturing user needs.

It is the aim of the International User Group and Regional User Groups to promote and stimulate the use of buildingSMART deliverables in order to improve interoperability in the construction industry, and to share experiences among its members so as to achieve a balance between giving and taking.

buildingSMART International has formed the Product Room and Process Room to support professionals within architecture, engineering, construction, product manufacturing, facility operations and management to enable them to benefit from building information modelling (BIM) through the use of open standards, known as openBIM.

IUG Users

Product Room

The Product Room is mainly focusing on the data specifications and procedures for how virtual building products should be constructed in order to be used in a virtual building.

Process Room

The Process Room is looking at the reengineering of design, construction and operation processes by building information modeling tools.

BIM Guides Wiki Project - Call for Participation

Around the world there are, literally, hundreds of publications and guides on how to run a BIM project. The BIM Guides Wiki Project, a buildingSMART initiative is an attempt to list all these guides in one place, review them and provide analysis to discover common elements and attributes.

Through reviews of every document, set against a template of criteria, the project sets out to analyse and provide a framework for industry BIM Guide development.

This valuable project needs volunteers to perform guide reviews, validate existing information and/or bring attention to new documents to be incorporated into the wiki. If you would like to participate, please contact Susan Keenliside at , or visit the site for more information.

Coordination View based on IFC4 - Call for Participation

The international User Group including the Process Room are looking for users to provide input to the coming Coordination View based on IFC4. A number of software products are supposed to be certified for Coordination View based on IFC4. The current Coordination View 2.0 is based on IFC2X3. More information about the Coordination View based on IFC4 is available at Github.

Please contact your local buildingSMART representative or Jan Karlshoej ( or ) if you want to be involved in specifying requirements for Coordination View based on IFC4. It is important to be involved when the requirements are made; it is too late when the software products have been certified.

User Panel on BIM Collaboration Format - Call for Participation

The International User Group and Process Room are looking for users to participate in an International User Panel on BIM Collaboration Format (BCF). BCF is powerful a method to transfer issues and comments in IFC models. BCF can also be used to capture requests in relation to Facility Management. As the format has the potential to be used for a variety of purposes it is vital to include users' views on a appropriate workflow and functionality.

A short introduction to BIM Collaboration Format can be found here. More technical information on BIM ver. 2.0 is available at Github.

Please contact your local representative or Jan Karlshoej ( or ) if you want to be involved in BCF User Panel.
